New Year's Day Organ Recital

'FIREWORKS AND FAREWELL'
THURSDAY 1 JANUARY 2015 at 11:00AM

Admission FREE, with retiring collection

  • Music for the Royal Fireworks – Handel
  • Christmas Concerto – Corelli
  • Andante sostenuto from Symphonie gothique – Widor
  • Toccata from Symphonie No. 5 – Widor
Director of Music Lee Dunleavy begins the New Year with an exhilarating recital of organ classics. The recital begins with transcriptions of two famous orchestral works, George Frederic Handel’s suite of dances for the Royal Fireworks, and Arcangelo Corelli’s baroque concerto which includes folk-like tunes and sounds evoking bagpipes to conjure images of the Biblical shepherds attending the manger at the birth of Jesus.  The recital concludes with two works by French organist-composer Charles-Marie Widor, his reflective and peaceful Andante sostenuto and his ever-popular whirlwind Toccata.  The recital will last 45 minutes and following the recital there will be light refreshments.  This will be the farewell recital for St Mary’s historic organ, which will be out of action for five months until the quinquennial repairs have been completed..
